Wild Rose Casinos and DraftKings have officially launched an online sportsbook in Iowa.

  • There are now six active online sportsbooks in Iowa and counting.
  • DraftKings has been operating retail sportsbooks in Iowa through its partnership with Wild Rose Casinos.
  • In-person registration will still be required in order to use DraftKings Sportsbook in Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa – On Wednesday, DraftKings announced the launch of their online sportsbook in Iowa.

DraftKings has been operating land-based sportsbooks in the Hawkeye State through their partnership with the three Wild Rose Casino locations since September 1, 2019. This will expand their partnership further and give bettors in Iowa a sixth online sports betting app to choose from.

“DraftKings has seen steady fan engagement in Iowa during the last few months at our three Wild Rose sportsbooks across the state, and we couldn’t be more excited to provide customers with our state-of-the-art mobile sports betting platform,” said Matt Kalish, Co-founder and President of DraftKings.

In order to use DraftKings, residents, and visitors of the state will have to sign up in person at a Wild Rose Casino location in either Clinton, Jefferson, or Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Tardy To The Party

The timing of DraftKings entering the online Iowa sports betting market can affect the success of the company in two ways.

The first being that bettors have already become accustomed to its competitors such as William Hill, which was the first company to launch an online sportsbook in the state. The second being that DraftKings missed out on online Super Bowl betting, which is the peak of sports gambling every year.

However, March Madness betting is fast approaching which should give the company and the Wild Rose Casinos a boost in immediate profits.

“We believe DraftKings is offering the best mobile app yet to Iowa sports betting enthusiast,” said Tom Timmons, president and COO of Wild Rose. “Since we opened the sportsbooks, we have been deluged with requests for this app. We are happy to offer it now, with the NCAA basketball tournament just around the corner.”

Biggest Challenges For DraftKings

The biggest obstacle that DraftKings may face is the same obstacle for any online sportsbook trying to enter Iowa and that is the in-person registration requirement.

Indiana has been beating Iowa in terms of online sportsbook revenue mainly due to this law. But, it won’t remain in place forever.

On January 1, 2021, anyone located in the state of Iowa will be able to sign up and use DraftKings as well as any other sports betting site in Iowa.
