• Thanks to mobile betting, SugarHouse Casino was responsible for 50% of all sports betting action during June.
  • Four mobile betting platforms are now active in Pennsylvania, while two of them only allow for Android usage.
  • The state of Pennsylvania has collected over $1 million in sports betting revenue in three of the last four months.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The first month of mobile sports betting has been accounted for in the state of Pennsylvania. With the addition, new records have been set.

June is considered one of the worst betting months of the year, with states like Mississippi and West Virginia hitting their lowest betting handle marks since their launch months.

However, Pennsylvania took the opposite approach. The state’s sportsbooks saw over $46 million in sports betting action for June, beating March’s previous monthly betting handle record of $44.5 million.

Almost 42% of that handle came directly from online bettors, who were able to place wagers at one of three licensed mobile betting sites. Of that 42% ($19.3 million), SugarHouse Casino led the way, accounting for 94% ($18.1 million) of all money wagered online.

The addition of mobile betting allowed SugarHouse, soon to be Rivers Casino Philadelphia, to set the tone. Their $23.3 million in both online and retail sports betting made up exactly half of the entire state’s betting action for the month.

This propelled Pennsylvania sportsbooks to post their third-highest month of sports betting revenue, which has now eclipsed the $2 million-dollar mark in six of the last seven months. February, the sole month other than their launch month to not hit that level, missed it by a mere $53,000.

These revenue and betting handle numbers are sure to increase moving forward, especially with the recent allowance of iPhone users to access the platform.

State tax revenue followed the books’ revenue numbers as the third-highest month ever in Pennsylvania sports betting history and the books have contributed over $1 million to the state in three of the last four months.

In the future – possibly in July – we will likely see new sportsbook and tax revenue records set, as bettors during June faired rather well against the books. Despite the largest handle on record, bettors were able to keep 93.25% of all wagers, leaving the books with their second-lowest hold percentage (6.75%) since their November launch.

Of the states that have reported their numbers through June, Pennsylvania is the only one who saw their sports betting handle and/or sportsbook revenue increase from Q1 2019 to Q2 2019.

Pennsylvania is certainly on the incline with this newest expansion, which came right in time for their residents and visitors to bet on the NFL.
