This has also led to a major drop in sports betting revenue, as West Virginia collected less from sportsbooks in February.
West Virginia has also seen a slight decrease year over year, with February 2020 numbers being higher than February 2021.
Sports Betting Down In West Virginia
It is interesting that West Virginia sports betting saw such a dip in productivity in February.
February saw Super Bowl betting, with Super Bowl 55 being the most wagered on Super Bowl in history. Also, NBA betting was in full swing, giving major events for sports betting fans in the Mountain State plenty of action to wager on.
Even so, the West Virginia Lottery reports that just $38.21 million was wagered in February, which is a 24.6% decrease from the $50.7 million wagered in January as well as a 1.3% decrease year over year.
This led to lower sports betting revenue numbers as well, with sportsbooks seeing $1.36 million in revenue and the state collecting just $115,954.
Revenue is down a whopping 66% from the $3.97 million collected in January where the state saw $337,990 in taxes.
Mobile betting also suffered. Just $27.09 million was wagered on sports through mobile betting apps, down 17.7% from the $32.9 million collected in January.
March may be a more profitable month for the Mountain State. March Madness betting will bring constant action to residents, and the continued NBA season is sure to garner betting activity as well.
While the month of February did see a dip in action, West Virginia still made a profit from legal sports betting and should have a positive attitude towards that.
West Virginia was -$626,470 in February 2020.
