DOVER, Del. – Sports betting fans in Delaware wagered plenty to start to New Year, with a major increase in both betting handle and sports betting revenue in January reported by the Delaware Lottery.

Delaware saw increases month over month at all the major sportsbooks, with Delaware Park seeing the most activity in January. Those betting on sports in Delaware continue to make the First State a successful legal sports betting market.

Delaware Strong 2021 Start

Per the official report released by the Delaware Sports Lottery, local bettors accounted for $11.7 million in handle in January, a 33.8% increase month over month from the $8.8 million wagered in December. Delaware also saw a 28.6% increase year-over-year. The First State saw just $9.1 million in wagers in January 2020.

Of the $11.7 million wagered in January, the sportsbooks saw $1,724,416 in sports betting revenue with $862,209 collected in state taxes.

There were a total of 262,672 wagers made to start the year, with the bulk of the wagers being placed at the Delaware Park sportsbook. $6.9 million was wagered and $990,649 was collected in revenue. In second place, the Harrington Raceway sportsbook saw $2.6 million in wagers with $403,584 collected in revenue. The third sportsbook, Dover Downs, saw $2.2 million bet on sports in January with $33,183 collected in revenue for the sportsbook.

Delaware’s strong start to the New Year should continue. The Super Bowl occurred in February, which was the most wagered-on event in US history. There is sure to be a major increase at Delaware sportsbooks as well.

Following suit, the NCAA March Madness Tournament is sure to see a lot of wagers. In addition, the NBA season is very much ongoing with action on a nightly basis.

Delaware is expected to continue to see strong numbers on both the betting handle and sports betting revenue side of things. Local sports betting fans will surely push the market forward in 2021.
