DES MOINES, IowaSports betting in Iowa has been very active to end the year as the Hawkeye State saw record-breaking numbers in sports betting activity.

Online and mobile sports betting continue to be the primary betting option for sports bettors in Iowa as the bulk of the wagers came online.

The continued NFL post-season, as well as the NBA season getting its footing, bodes well for the future of the Iowa sports betting market with the many betting events available.

Iowa Sees Continued Growth

The Hawkeye State has steadily seen growth in its sports betting market. Iowa legalized sports betting in 2019 and has slowly grown to be one of the more popular legal sports betting markets in the country.

Iowa has 19 retail sportsbooks operating currently and a slew of major mobile betting operations as well including DraftKings and FanDuel.

From these active betting operations, the official sports wagering revenue report shows that Iowa saw $104,815,629.59 bet on sports in December. This is the first time Iowa surpassed $100 million in wagers.

Since the global COVID-19 pandemic shutdown so many operations, sports bettors have leaned on betting at online sportsbooks in Iowa, which accounted for the bulk of the betting handle. A total of $78,074,462.10 was bet at mobile sportsbooks.

Retail books saw the remaining $26,741,167.49 bet on sports.

In terms of sports betting revenue and how it benefited the state, Iowa collected $508,747.77 in state tax. Iowa allocates sports betting revenue to help fund education.

The most active sportsbook in December was the Prairie Meadows Racetrack & Casino. The retail book saw more than $22 million wagered with over $20 million of the wagers coming online.

NFL betting will likely push wagers in January as well as continued NBA betting and NHL starting this month. Add that with the fact that remote registration is allowed and its easy to see the January sports betting numbers being even higher.

Iowa has already become one of the biggest legal sports betting markets in the country and should likely keep growing in 2021.
