  • Washington DC saw a 10% decrease in total betting handle in December.
  • The Gambet DC mobile app saw an increase in betting activity.
  • William Hill saw a decrease in sports betting handle.

WASHINGTON – Sports bettors in Washington DC may have embraced GambetDC, the state lottery run mobile sportsbook more in December, but overall betting activity has seen a slight decrease.

The William Hill sportsbook, which accounted for the bulk of betting activity in the Nation’s Capital in the past has seen the most losses, contributing to the overall decline in betting handle in the area.

With plans to add new sportsbooks as well as the new offerings from GambetDC and Simplebet, the Washington DC sports betting market should bounce back in later months.

Slight Losses In DC Betting

DC bettors overall spent less on sports betting, leading to an overall $16.7 million in betting handle, a 5.1% decrease from the $17.6 million in November.

Despite this, GambetDC saw a 10% increase in sports betting handle according to the DC Lottery which amounted to $4.3 million bets on sports via the mobile app in December.

William Hill, after seeing $13.7 million wagered in November, took a 9.5% decrease to a betting handle of $12.4 million in December.

William Hill launched its mobile sportsbook option at the end of December, but the sportsbook is limited to a two-block radius surrounding the Capital One Arena.

Still, with a full month of mobile betting coming, William Hill is sure to bounce back and see increases in betting activity for January.

GambetDC should also see continued growth. The state lottery run mobile sportsbook is currently the only fully mobile betting option in the Nation’s Capital and has recently added Simplebet live betting technology to their platform.

In addition, in-game drive bets have also been added for DC bettors on the GambetDC app, adding even more options for locals to play to win big.

Washington DC will also be seeing a slew of new sports betting operations soon that will surely increase the overall sports betting revenue in the state.

BetMGM has recently partnered with the Washington Nationals to bring its first-ever open venue sportsbook in Nationals Park as well as its mobile sportsbook in DC.

The legal sports betting market in the Nation’s Capital should begin to see steady growth with all the new options available.
