Gubernatorial Betting

Gubernatorial betting is becoming one of the more popular ways to get involved in political betting. Gubernatorial is a fancy word for Governor, which every state in the United States has. This makes betting on Gubernatorial races so exciting as there will always be states voting on a new Governor almost every year. Whether during the Presidential Election season or during midterm elections there are plenty of opportunities to bet on Governor’s races since they happen more frequently across the entire United States than that of the Presidential kind.

Plenty of legal offshore sports betting sites have a category for members to wager on the Gubernatorial races throughout the nation. These betting lines can typically be found in the political area of any sportsbook. States that have elections the same year as Presidential elections tend to get overshadowed in the wagers department because the Presidency is the bigger deal when it comes to events to bet on and bookies know it. However, lines can still be found for a Governor’s race in states holding them, a gambler just needs to know where to look, and coming to this page is the first step in finding the answers needed to learn more about Gubernatorial betting.

Is It Legal To Bet On The Next Governor?

Yes, it’s legal. However, no regulated US sportsbooks are currently offering odds on Gubernatorial elections or political odds in general, so the only safe and legal way to wager on the next Governor in races nationwide is through an offshore sportsbook. These online sports betting platforms allow bettors to legally place Gubernatorial bets with lines to choose from because they operate outside of the jurisdiction of the United States. They are licensed and regulated to do business in their home countries which allows them to legally provide their services to the people of the USA. There are no laws that prohibit the use of these operators for the purposes of betting on any number of events, including the elections for Governor that happen all over the country almost annually. For political betting enthusiasts, the online sportsbooks we recommend on this page are the single best way to go for political betting odds.

Betting Odds On The 2022 Governor Races

Betting odds on the 2022 Governor races in the states holding an election this year are already available to bettors over on BetOnline. With over thirty states having Gubernatorial elections in 2022, there are not odds available for all of them. Two notable betting lines available right now are for Georgia and New York. Below are the odds on the top four candidates for both elections, although more are available at BetOnline.

Georgia – Republican Primary

  • David Perdue -130
  • Brian Kemp -110
  • Vernon Jones +1200
  • Doug Collins +8000

New York Democratic Primary

  • Kathy Hochul -800
  • Jumaane Williams +600
  • Tom Suozzi +800
  • Bill De Blasio +4000

Also available are more simple futures for which party will secure the position of governor in their respective state.

Michigan

  • Republicans -165
  • Democrats +125

Gretchen Whitmer (D) won the last Michigan election in 2018 by a 53.3% majority. Before that however, Rick Snyder (R) held the position, showing that Michigan could go either way in terms of party loyalty. As it stands, the Republican Party is being favored to win the Michigan Gubernatorial race, but that could change as election day grows nearer. Current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is running for re-election in 2022, and it’s typically more common for governors to serve two terms than one. So Governor Whitmer may see better odds as we get closer to the election.

Nevada

  • Republicans -130
  • Democrats -110

Although a Democrat has been acting as Nevada’s governor for the past four years by way of Steve Sisolak (D), a republican held the seat before him, named Brian Sandoval. Sandoval won the 2014 election in a landslide victory with 70.6% majority vote. That would be his last term however, due to Nevada’s term limit law. Sisolak went on to win the 2018 race against Adam Laxalt (R.) The books are currently favoring the Democratic party, but not by very much.

Arizona

  • Republicans -300
  • Democrats +200

Arizona has been a red state for the past 2 Gubernatorial races, and the odds are certainly favoring it to stay that way. In 2014, Republican party candidate Doug Ducey won with a 53.4% majority. Then he went on to win again in 2018 with an even bigger 56.0% majority. Anything can happen in politics, but it seems like the sportsbooks are expecting the Republican party to win again this year as well. However, Ducey will not be eligible to run for re-election this year due to term limits. This opens the door for fresh faces to make their case to the Arizona citizens.

Georgia

  • Republicans -200
  • Democrats +150

Since the 2002 race, Georgia has been a red state with a Republican governor. However, before 2002 Georgia only had Democratic Party governors for more than 100 years. So the shift to a Republican governor was unheard of at the time, and since then Georgia citizens have been keeping to the Republican party for three governors in a row. Sportsbooks are still favoring the Republican Party for another victory in the 2022 Gubernatorial race, but this could be the year the Democratic party restores their previous hold on Georgia.

New York

  • Democrats -10000
  • Republicans +1500

New York’s last Republican Party governor was George Pataki in 2002, before he was replaced by Elliot Spitzer in the 2006 Gubernatorial election. Since that time New York has kept a Democrat in office, but after a scandal compelled Andrew Cuomo to step down as New York’s governor in 2021, it’s possible that the public’s trust in the party has waned. That being said, New York has historically been a blue state and is likely to remain that way. Sportsbooks are currently heavily favoring the democratic party to win the election.

Pennsylvania

  • Democrats -120
  • Republicans -120

Although Pennsylvania has had a good number of both Republican and Democratic party governors in the past, only one Republican governor has been elected in the past 20 years. Democrat Tom Wolf has served as Pennsylvania’s governor twice since being elected in 2014 for the first time, having run on the Democratic Party ticket. While the Republican Party is still deciding between a host of potential nominees, the Democratic Party only has one candidate currently. The odds available from online sportsbooks are the same on both sides right now, but will almost certainly shift one way or the other as we get closer to the elections.

Wisconsin

  • Republicans -240
  • Democrats +165

Since 2002, Wisconsin has seen three governors, two of which served more than one term. Two of those three candidates were Democrats, but the Republican governor, Scott Walker, managed to serve three consecutive terms before being succeeded by Tony Evers, a Democrat, in 2018. The incumbent governor Tony Evers recently announced his bid for re-election where he raised over $10 million in 2021, the most raised by a Gubernatorial candidate in Wisconsin’s history. Despite this, sportsbooks are still favoring a Republican victory, but these odds will be updated many times before the election happens in November.

Understanding Gubernatorial Betting Odds

When looking to place bets on Gubernatorial betting odds there two common ways to go about this; through futures odds or through a variety of Governor prop bets. While these are the two most utilized ways to bet on the Governor’s races some sportsbooks may offer more specific odds that revolve around which party will win the most Gubernatorial Elections or which political party will win the Governorship in a specific state. Understanding the odds is one of the most important steps to ensuring you’ve made a smart bet on a Governor’s race no matter which state the wager is focused on or where in the United States the gambler resides.

Futures: Betting To Win Gubernatorial Election

Every bet on the Gubernatorial Election can be seen as a futures bet because gamblers place their wagers prior to the beginning of the election. This is why futures are the most common way to get some political action in on Governor’s races because they make up the bulk of offerings on the topic. Typically, these bets are centered around a nominee’s chances of winning as well as a particular party’s chances. As can be seen in the 2022 odds for the next elected Georgia Governor

Governor Betting Props

The best thing about prop bets is that they can be about anything and everything that happens during a campaign, through the election. Governor prop bets are no different and here are a few examples of what can be expected on sportsbooks when the time gets closer.
