• Parx Casino was responsible for 21.4% of all tax contributions in April.
  • South Philadelphia Turf Club posted the highest casino hold percentage at nearly 17%.
  • FanDuel Sportsbook is primed to become one of the PA sportsbook leaders, bringing in over $5 million in a month and a half.

HARRISBURG, Pa. – April marked the second month of all eight Pennsylvania sportsbooks reporting revenue numbers. Though they weren’t as powerful as March’s numbers, the books still showed their dominance.

A total of $36,769,146 was wagered, down from March’s all-time high of $44,527,574.

The books held 11.48% of all action, keeping $4,332,482 in revenue. Having a tax rate in Pennsylvania at 36%, the state and local governments were able to secure $1,519,734 of that revenue.

Every book saw their overall handle decrease, with the exceptions of the two Valley Forge sportsbooks, who reported partial months from their mid-March launch. Part of this was the conclusion of March Madness, while others looked to not being able to bet on the NFL Draft as a reason as well.

Since the start of the year, Pennsylvania sportsbooks have contributed $4,860,250 to the state government; however, the average monthly contributions are expected to skyrocket with the inclusion of mobile betting around the corner.

The first book in the Pittsburgh region, Rivers Sportsbook, saw their handle on top of the seven other books for the third straight month.

However, it was the Parx Casino that kept the most revenue. Posting the second-highest hold at 13.24%, Parx held $92,702 less than $1 million for the month.

Both of these venues have contributed $2,566,429 to the state and local governments, nearly half of the total for 2019.

Sugarhouse Casino’s Sportsbook is less than $50,000 away from joining the duo, though they have given $1,183,143 to the governments since their December launch.

The Sportsbook at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course continues to wish that their bettors would venture to a different book. Their 9.21% hold was yet again the lowest of any of the books – being at the bottom or second from the bottom in every reported month so far. This equates to a year-to-date hold of 6.63%, only requiring the book to donate $425,394 to the governments in that time.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the South Philadelphia Race & Sportsbook notched another month posting a hold over 10%. The Turf Club is the only book to have posted a hold over 10% for four straight months since the Pennsylvania legal sports betting industry launched in November.

FanDuel Sportsbook at Valley Forge Casino has come on strong in their month and a half of action. With two months of operation less than The Book at Harrah’s Philadelphia, FanDuel has accumulated only $21,000 less in revenue. Posting over $3 million as their handle in April, FanDuel Sportsbook saw the fourth-most money enter their book.

Finishing off the books, the other Valley Forge location, the Valley Forge Race & Sportsbook took in the lowest handle for both March and April. However, their bettors have helped the book out, allowing them to keep 14% of all action – the second-highest hold percentage year-to-date.

Since the start of legal sports betting in Pennsylvania, the total tax contributions to both state and local governments have eclipsed $6 million, as $5.16 million have come from 2019 alone.
