Legal College Football Betting

As fall draws near, football fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of college football; perhaps the only thing that can make the pageantry and tradition of college football more exciting is betting on the games. Luckily, with the proliferation of legal sports betting throughout the United States, college football fans can easily get in on the action and place wagers on essentially any college football matchup. 30 jurisdictions – plus Washington, D.C. – have officially regulated sports betting in some fashion; however, if you do not live in one of these jurisdictions, there is no need to fret. Offshore online sportsbooks are available to American sports bettors from any state, and they are safe and easy to use. This means that no matter where college football fans reside, they can legally bet on college football online.

College Football Betting At Bovada

Is It Legal To Bet On College Football?

It is absolutely legal to bet on college football. With over half of the 50 states offering some form of state-regulated legal sports betting,  college football lines are available in most of the nation through state-regulated books; however, be warned – some states restrict state-regulated sportsbooks from offering lines on in-state college teams, college prop bets, or college sports in general. If you live in one of those states, or a state that has yet to regulate sports betting, it is still legal to bet on college football – you will just have to utilize an internationally-based online sportsbook. These sportsbooks are completely legal for American sports bettors and often offer much more valuable lines than their state-regulated counterparts, making them a wise choice even in states with state-regulated sportsbooks.

Current College Football Odds

With the start of the 2022 college football season nearing, there are future odds that can be wagered on for moneylines, conference championships, and most importantly, the winner of the CFP. The Alabama Crimson Tide are the favorite to win the National Championship for the 2022 season but have only actually won the title as the preseason favorite one time in 2017.

As the season starts and progresses, legal sportsbooks will update the odds for the National Title every single week, depending on teams wins, loses, or even injury reports.

Betting On New Years Six Bowl Games

While bowl games in college football are the biggest time of the year for college football, nothing beats the New Years Six Bowl games. These are the most prestigious bowl games each year as they all feature some of the top Power 5 teams in the country. Two of these games each year even make up the College Football Playoffs. The bowl games that make up the New Years Six Bowls are as follows:

  • Peach Bowl (Atlanta, Georgia)
  • Orange Bowl (Miami, Florida)
  • Cotton Bowl Classic (Arlington, Texas)
  • Fiesta Bowl (Glendale, Arizona)
  • Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California)
  • Sugar Bowl (New Orleans, Louisiana)

Future CFP Bowl Games

  • 2022: Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl
  • 2023: Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl
  • 2024: Cotton Bowl, Orange Bowl
  • 2025: Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl

Betting On FCS Football At Legal Sports Betting Sites

Internationally-based online sportsbooks offer an extensive variety of odds on all sports at various levels; while FCS-level games will not be nearly as common as their FBS counterparts, several FCS football games each week will have odds offered. These games usually feature higher-profile FCS programs like North Dakota State and Jackson State. These odds are not often released early in the week, so be sure to check out FCS sportsbooks Bovada on Friday night or Saturday morning to see if your FCS team’s odds are being offered.

Betting On The 2022 NCAAF Conference Champions

Outside of betting on the NCAA Championship game, there are odds available for the 2022 NCAAF Conference Champions. These teams simply need to win the conference for betting fans to cash in big. There are great odds at online sportsbooks for betting on conference winners, specifically for longshot betting. No matter how you want to play, betting on the Conference Finals can net big wins for players.

The College Football World has begun to shake up as many Power Five Conferences have been making moves to add teams. With the movement of many big named schools, it can affect the betting odds for conference titles, National Championships, gamelines and much more. Betting Strategies/Types For College Football

As one of the most popular sports to bet on in the United States, online sportsbooks provide many different ways to bet on college football. Whether wanting to wager on an individual money line, or the total passing yards for CJ Stroud during his hunt for the Heisman, legal sportsbooks have odds that can be bet on all year long.

  • CFB Moneyline – This is a bet on the outright winner of the game, where each team is assigned a set of American-style odds, which describes the payout for a winning bet. The favorite is represented with a negative number, such as (-150), while the underdog is listed with a positive number, such as (+125). A negative number indicates the amount of money that must be wagered to win a $100 profit.
  • Spread Betting – The most common way to bet on college football is by betting against the spread. Since bookmakers always attempt to garner an equal amount of money wagered on both sides of the bet, oddsmakers will assign a spread as a handicap to make the game as even as possible. A spread simply adds or subtracts points from one side.
  • Total Points Bet – Betting on the points total is often referred to as betting the over/under. Sportsbooks will provide a projected points total for each game by both teams combined. Wager on greater or fewer points than the projection and if the bettor is correct, they win the payout.
  • CFB Future Odds – Future betting for college football is as simple as placing a wager on the National Championship winner, conference champion, or Heisman winner. These bets can be placed anytime during the year, and offer higher payouts when placed early.
  • Taking A Parlay – Parlays are essentially multiple bets combined into one. Each of these bets is referred to as a “leg” of the parlay – to win the payout, bettors must win each leg of the parlay. Combine as many legs into a parlay as you wish, but one loss spoils the entire bet. To make up for the exponential increase in difficulty, parlays also greatly increase the payout in comparison to single bets.

Types Of NCAA Football Props

For each individual Saturday matchup, there are multiple prop bets for each team, that focus on scoring totals, or individual player performances. Depending on the importance of the game, or how soon until kickoff, the more prop bets will be available. There are also specific props that focus on specific players from either team. Here are some standard examples of college prop bets:

  • Winning Margin
  • Exact Final Score
  • First Scoring Method
  • First Team To Score
  • Player With The Most Rush Yards
  • Team With Most Turnovers
  • Will There Be A Safety?
  • Will Either Team Not Score?

New Playoff Structure

In 2021, a 12-team playoff structure was proposed for college football, in order to expand the amount if teams bale to compete for the National Title. This playoff proposition was voted on in January of 2022 by the CFP committee but was reported to be nowhere near unanimous, failing to see any change in the near future. The current structure, if untouched, is in place until 2025. This type of expansion would most likely result in a team from every conference having a lock into the playoffs, there has been plenty of chaos around teams switching conferences, and part of this chaos has been to push for the desired expansion.

Futures Bets For College Football

Futures bets are, as the name suggests, bets on future outcomes. College football futures bets come in a variety of forms – the most common of these are championship futures bets – but CFB betting sites permit wagering on the winner of divisions, conferences, and more. Even once the season is underway, these futures bets will still be offered with constantly-updated odds. Futures bets are some of the most difficult to win. In the last few decades, only two preseason favorites have won the National Championship Game: USC in 2004 and Alabama in 2017.

Betting On The 2022-2023 Heisman Trophy Winner

Betting on Heisman Trophy futures odds is one of the most popular college football futures bets each year. The Heisman Trophy is an annual award voted on by the Heisman Trophy Committee for the top college football player of the year and one of the most-discussed awards in sports; therefore, Heisman Trophy odds will be offered on internet sportsbooks beginning in the offseason and be constantly upd ated to reflect on-field performance until the night of the ceremony. Early Heisman Trophy odds will be much longer than late-season odds, so getting your bet in early is a great practice for this particular futures bet.

2022-2023 Heisman Trophy Odds

Betting On College Football Win Totals

Win totals are one of the more popular bets to make during the preseason as teams are given a set total and you can bet on them to go over or under the projected total. It is also worth noting that win total odds can shift throughout the season with the odds on both sides shifting depending on where things are going for that team. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia Bulldogs are prime examples of odds that can and will likely shift throughout the season. Both were given the highest set win totals in 2022-23 amongst any CFB team at 11.5 with plus odds on the over. As for the lowest win totals, it is set at 2.5 and three teams are listed with it in Vanderbilt, Arizona, and Kansas.

  • Alabama has seen double digit wins in their last 10 seasons, but have only gone over 11.5 twice.
  • They’ve also been given an 11.5 projected win total in their last three seasons in which they have stayed under twice.
  • Georgia has gone four straight seasons with double digit wins – with last season being their first over 11.5 wins.
  • Kansas has only gone over a 2.5-win total in four of the last 12 seasons.
  • Vanderbilt has stayed under 2.5 wins in the last two seasons, but has gone over in nine seasons prior to that.
  • The Arizona Wildcats are favored to go over their 2.5 total, but have missed it in the last two seasons.

Betting On Arch Manning In College

Arch Manning made history with his commitment to the Texas Longhorns being one just five recruits to ever receive a 1.000 rating. With that, oddsmakers did not hold back on their hype and have listed Arch Manning college prop bets for how his career in college will go.

  • To Win Heisman Trophy +200
  • To Win Heisman Trophy As A Freshman +1400
  • To Win 1+ Big 12 Or SEC Championship Game +115
  • To Win Big 12 Championship Game As A Freshman +170
  • To Win College Football Playoff National Championship +225
  • To Win College Football Playoff National Championship As A Freshman +1200

Past Conference Championship Odds

This past 2021 season of College Football was the first time since 2016 that Clemson, Ohio State, and Oklahoma all did not win their respective conferences. In fact, none of them did, leading to huge payouts for anyone that bet on Pittsburgh(+6600), Michigan(+2500), or Baylor(+5000) to win their conferences prior to the season. The past five winners and their preseason odds to win their conference can be found below.

Conference ACC SEC Big 10 Big 12
2021 Pittsburgh(+6600) Alabama(-165) Michigan(+2500) Baylor(+5000)

College Football Parlay Bets

Parlay bets hold a special place in sports betting lore and popular culture as they take the inherent risk/reward dynamic to new heights. Parlays are essentially multiple bets combined into one. Parlays are popular primarily due to their increased payout. Many sportsbooks have restrictions on the types of bets that can be parlayed. Some sportsbooks may prevent bettors from parlaying multiple bets on the same game, especially if the bets play off of each other in any capacity. Be sure to check your sportsbook terms and conditions to see what their parlay rules are.

Live In-Game College Football Betting

Live betting is a relatively new type of wager in the online sports betting world. Live betting CFB odds allows bettors to wager on the action as it unfolds in real-time. Betting the points spreads, moneylines, points totals, and even prop bets are possible depending on the college football sportsbook. Live betting will enhance not only your sports betting experience but also your game viewing experience.

Mobile College Football Betting Apps

Right now, there aren’t any official mobile college football betting apps available from the App Store or Google Play. However, you don’t actually need to download any apps to enjoy a full menu of mobile betting at any of the top sportsbook sites, as they have all developed iPhone and Android-optimized web pages that allow you to quickly browse the boards and place your bets with just a few taps and swipes. Additionally, unlike land-based betting apps that use GPS to only allow you to wager if you’re on a casino’s property or within the borders of a certain state, offshore sportsbooks are not geo-fenced. This means that as long as you have a mobile device and an active Internet connection (whether Wi-Fi or cellular), you can place wagers from wherever you are.

New Playoff Structure

College football will be seeing changes come to its playoff structure in the near future as the NCAA has voted to expand the postseason into a 12 team race. Currently, it sits at four teams total. What this will do is increase the possibility of teams competing for the championship and should spice up sports betting as well. An expanded playoff structure means the increased likelihood of upsets and Cinderella stories taking place. Due to contracts, however, this will not go into effect until the 2023 season. So sports betting fans will continue to wager on the same structure for the next few seasons.

Legal College Football Betting FAQ’s

Can I be arrested for betting on college football over the Internet?

No. It is not illegal to wager on college football events online, therefore you will not be persecuted for doing so. College football betting is a popular sports betting activity that takes place every year. Throughout the season, online sportsbooks offer betting lines that can be legally wagered on. Whether you are betting at a regulated sportsbook, or at an international betting site, you can legally bet on college football without the risk of getting arrested.

Can I bet on every college team at legal online sportsbooks?

Not every college football team is going to have odds at legal online sportsbooks. There are too many college football teams but books do their best to include them. D2 and D3 teams will likely have action as well as FCS betting odds. But, keep in mind that each game is different. The CFB betting sites may offer a moneyline, but could avoid adding a spread or props to that game.

How come some college football games don’t have straight bets available?

In college football, some games are so obviously lopsided that it wouldn’t make sense for the sportsbook to offer this type of bet. The sportsbook’s goal is to get an equal amount of sports bettors on each side of the betting line. If everyone picks the favorite, then they won’t make any money. When you have a team like Alabama playing a D2 school, the question isn’t whether or not they are going to win but how much are they going to win by. That’s why online sportsbooks may have a point spread for that game but won’t accept moneyline wagers.

What is the legal college football betting age?

There is no specific legal college football betting age, though state laws that have set their sports betting ages to 21 should be adhered to. Aside from that, all the top sportsbooks only require their members to be 18 in order to sign up and play. Be warned, however, that if you sign up at any offshore sports betting site under the age of 18, you will have your account suspended and all associated funds forfeited.

Should I use Bitcoin to bet on college football?

Yes, you should use Bitcoin to bet on college football. Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) is the number-one way to wager on college sports. Crypto deposits are fast, the limits are astronomical, and there are no added fees. Transfers always go through, as Bitcoin doesn’t need any bank processing. Additionally, you can only withdraw in crypto if you deposit in crypto. It makes that much sense to bet on college football with Bitcoin.
