Is Land-Based Sports Betting Legal In Puerto Rico?

Land-based sports betting is legal in Puerto Rico at Casino Del Mar at La Concha Resort in Sam Juan only. A BetMGM sportsbook has been operating there since February, 2022 after the legislation passed in 2019. This is the only retail sportsbook in all of “la Isla de Coquito” so if you are looking to place your bets in person, you’ll need to make your way there.

Is It Legal To Bet On Sports Online In Puerto Rico?

Yes, there is both a regulated online sports betting market and a licensed online betting market in San Juan. The difference though is that with the regulated market, you would need to go to the actual sportsbook location in San Juan and sign up in person before you can use it anywhere on the island. With the licensed online sportsbook like Bovada or BetOnline, you can sign up and bet from wherever you are.

Is There Anywhere In Puerto Rico That I Can Bet On Sports?

As of now, the only place for people in Puerto Rico to bet on sports is with the use of their computer or cell phone. The legal industry for Puerto Rican sports betting has not yet launched which means that the only legal action gamblers have access to is with the use of international sports betting websites. These websites are completely legal, regulated, licensed, and safe for all sports bettors in Puerto Rico looking to bet on the games to join and gamble with. While they have no downloadable applications, they have mobile-optimized sites that can be opened through the search engine of any mobile device with internet capabilities. This allows anywhere to be a legal Puerto Rico sports betting place.

Where’s The Closest Place For Me To Bet?

When it comes to retail sports betting, the only land-based sportsbook that you’ll find is at La Concha in San Juan at the BetMGM. With the entire mainland island only 110 miles long and 35 miles wide, it is a 2-hour drive or less for anyone to get there. For those that live on the outskirts of the island though in Ponce, Mayaguez, Patillas, or one of the islands in Culebra or Vieques and do not want to make the trip, you’ll find that the closest sportsbook to you is right from your phone or computer. Bovada and BetOnline are both legal online sportsbooks in PR and have been for over 10 years.

Puerto Rico Sports Betting And Gambling Laws

Legal Puerto Rico sports betting has had to incur many obstacles since its inception. Puerto Rico’s former Governor, Rico Rosselló Nevares, signed sports betting, DFS, and other forms of entertainment into law in July 2019. This law was open-ended and did not have much by way of general rules and regulations allowed for each new sector of the industry. Before Nevares could get to that part, he resigned from his position because of a scandal that surrounded him at the time. The law then took a backseat while Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced got settled into her new position within the government.

In April of 2020 when things began to take flight as far as drawing up plans for the sports wagering market in Puerto Rico, the Director of the Gambling for Puerto Rico’s Tourism Board, Jaime Alex Irizarry resigned and pushed the market’s plans back to square one as far as blueprints were concerned. The law itself will allow for retail and mobile sportsbooks and give remote access to mobile sports betting platforms, including registering for them.

José Balasquide-Córdova and Cristóbal Méndez were chosen by Gov. Garced to head the sports betting operation and they got it done with legal online and retail sports betting launching in February 2022. All sports betting revenue that is made will also be taxed at 12%.

What Teams Can I Bet On?

There are no teams that are barred from bets in Puerto Rico. Fans of the Toronto Raptors can wager on the team just like fans of the Los Angeles Lakers can place their bets. Then there are always sports happening in Europe with matches open for bets. Puerto Rican gamblers can wager on these teams as well. College teams, professional teams, international teams, more well-known leagues, lesser-known organizations, all of these types of sports, and their teams will be posted with betting lines on offshore sportsbooks for gamblers in Puerto Rico to put some money in on the games.

Mobile Sports Betting In Puerto Rico

The best thing about mobile sports betting in Puerto Rico is that you can be anywhere in Puerto Rico and still have access to your favorite legal sports betting site right from your device. You could be in the streets of La Placita de Santurce or on the beach at the Caribe Hilton and place all of your bets within seconds. The best thing about these legal mobile betting sites is that they do not require you to download an app, all you have to do is enter the sites URL to your device and log in as you would on a computer. Some of those devices include:

  • iPhone
  • Android
  • Samsung Galaxy
  • iPad
  • LG Wing
  • Microsoft Surface

Puerto Rico Mobile Sports Betting Apps

Puerto Rico does not currently have any sports betting apps for the public to download to their phones and bet on sporting events. When the sports betting industry rolls out, mobile sportsbook applications will be a part of the package. At the moment, all mobile sportsbooks that are legal to use in Puerto Rico are offshore and do not have nor do they require applications on a cellphone. All members of these sportsbooks can simply log into their accounts using their phones and bet 24/7 as if their cellphone were a nice little handheld computer which, to be fair, is essentially what all smartphones are.

Horse Racing Betting In Puerto Rico

Horse racing and wagering on the sport is a very popular pastime in Puerto Rico. The Hipódromo Camarero, also known as the Camarero Race Track is the only horse racing track in all of Puerto Rico. But the horses are well-loved by gamblers from all over and the track often sees millions of dollars in handle wagered on the races. Gambling on horse racing was legal well before sports betting became legalized. There is a steep history of horse racing betting in Puerto Rico which is why there has been an outlet for fans to legally gamble on the events for years with the Camarero. Once mobile sportsbooks become available, bettors can likely wager on the local races via these platforms as well.

Daily Fantasy Sports In Puerto Rico

Through the legalization of sports betting in Puerto Rico in 2019 came the legalization of Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS). DFS, like sports wagering, has not yet been given a set of rules for their industry so it’s not yet available to residents. Operators like DraftKings and FanDuel are looking to be part of the DFS landscape in Puerto Rico once the market is up and running to allow for licenses to be given out to companies to start doing business. In short, DFS is legal in Puerto Rico. But the long answer of it is, even if players can get in on contests and other offerings by these platforms, they’ll be unable to cash out on any prizes until the lawmakers puts their rules into practice.
