Who Is Mattress Mack?

Jim McIngvale, a.k.a. “Mattress Mack”, is the owner and CEO of Gallery Furniture, and frequently makes headlines by placing huge wagers on championship games of various sports. McIngvale started this successful furniture chain in Houston in 1981, using $5,000 to purchase inventory and his truck to move and sell it. Gallery Furniture has since blossomed into one of the most successful furniture stores in Texas and reportedly earns about $200 million in revenue annually. As his business grew, McIngvale’s net worth grew concurrently, and now has a net worth north of $300 million. Mattress Mack put his manic energy to good use in regional commercials for his company, and their popularity made him something of a celebrity in the Houston community as well as in the world of sports betting.

Mattress Mack Betting On 2022 Kentucky Derby

Mattress Mack laid over one million dollars on Epicenter to win the 148th running of the Kentucky derby. As soon as Mack made his bet the odds for Epicenter moved to 9/2. Jockey Joel Rosario (15 Breeders Cup wins) will be atop the 3 year old colt. The pair will be starting from the 3rd gate which has produced 5 derby winners. Trainer Steven Asmussen is looking for his 4th Triple Crown win and his first Kentucky Derby winner.

Epicenter is looking to break one million in career earnings as he sits at $940,000 in cash won. Add it all up and it makes since why Mattress Mack bet more than a million dollars on the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

Mattress Mack Betting On 2022 March Madness

The sports gambling legend Mattress Mack struck again betting on March Madness. Mack went into the tournament feeling very strongly about the East Region and placed a $1 million dollar bet on any from that quadrant to win the tournament that would pay out $2.16 million. The East Region featured the Baylor Bears (1 seed) and Texas Longhorns (6 seed), who are both located in Mack’s state of Texas, which he tied into his promotion. The promotion offered by the owner and CEO of Gallery Furniture for this bet was that if his bet hit, any customer who spent at least $3,000 at his store would get their money back. The promotion was only valid if either of the teams from Texas in the East Region won the title. The University of North Carolina knocked off Baylor en route to a surprise appearance in the National Championship game as an eighth seed.

Once Baylor and Texas were knocked out of the tournament, Mack decided to test his luck again, but this time before the Final Four stage. Mattress Mack bet $3.3 million dollars on the Kansas Jayhawks to win the National Championship game at +190 odds to win $6.27 million!

Mattress Mack Bets $9.5M On Bengals In SB 56

Caesars Sportsbook took a series of wagers totaling $4,534,000 from Mattress Mack on the Cincinnati Bengals in early February that will payout more than $7.7 million if the underdog won. This is not the first time that Mack has placed a wager in the millions. However, Mack continued his Super Bowl 56 betting craze and laid another $5 million on the Bengals just before SB LVI kicked off. Though the $16.2 million wasn’t won, Mack’s SB 56 bets are in the record books for the largest online sports bet placed.

Mattress Mack Betting Against The Kansas City Chiefs

One of the most historic games in the NFL and of course Mattress Mack dropped a big bag on it. The Kansas City Cheifs and the Houston Texans had a game to play that determined who will go to the AFC championship and Mack just knew that the Chiefs would lose and placed a huge bet on the Houston Texans. Texans had Mack feeling pretty good after jumping out to a 24-0 lead. Even with the 24-0 lead, the Cheifs found a way to continue to score and come back and win the game. Even after this game, Mack still didn’t believe in the Chiefs and bet against them again on the following weekend when playing against the Tennessee Titans. The Chiefs end up winning that game and Mack lost another big bet as well.

Super Bowl LV

On three major stages, the Chiefs got the best of McIngvale, whose marketing genius has gotten him in continual spotlight. In 2021, nothing changed, as Mattress Mack dropped $3.4 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to cover the spread (+3.5) against the KC Chiefs in Super Bowl LV. This monster bet from McIngvale was placed at DraftKings Sportsbook as he was on his phone in Colorado Springs. Mattress Mack is one of the largest legal Super Bowl betting players and despite his losses, he still finds ways to come out on top.

Super Bowl LIV

Despite being burned betting against the Chiefs twice already, McIngvale once again bet $1 million against them. He tied this Super Bowl bet into another promotion for his stores similar to what he did with the Astros, offering money-back guarantees to customers who purchased at least $3,000 worth of furniture if the 49ers won the game. Instead, the Chiefs once again rallied to win 31-20. Despite going 0-for-3 on his NFL postseason bets, McIngvale has given no indication that he plans to stop betting any time soon.

Mattress Mack Astros World Series Promotion

When the Houston Astros defeated the New York Yankees in six games to advance to the 2019 World Series, Mattress Mack saw an opportunity for a lucrative promotional deal. If the Astros won the World Series, he announced, all customers who purchased at least $3,000 worth of furniture from his Gallery furniture stores would receive a full refund.

McIngvale made the creative decision to use sports wagering as a form of insurance on his promotion. This famous sports bettor made a series of bets on the Astros in three different states, totaling $13 million. If these bets won, the estimated $12 million in additional winnings from his bets would cover his projected losses from the promotion.

This type of promotional insurance has become an annual tradition for McIngvale, and some experts have intoned that it may become common practice for business owners as an alternative to traditional insurance. McIngvale had a similar promotion during the 2017 World Series, which the Astros won. He attributed $15 million in sales directly to the promotional offer and buoyed the high-profile bet into an official partnership with the team.

Mattress Mack Is Back For The 2020 World Series!

Mattress Mack is nothing if not a diehard Houston Astros fan. The famous sports bettor of the Astros and other Houston teams has been loyal to a fault and that loyalty continues after placing a $10K wager on the Houston Astros to win the 2020 World Series. Of course, this is a far cry from the millions he has wagered on the team in the past and there are no promotions for his store to go along with this 2020 bet but should he win, he will take home $300K. Mattress Mack would have made $25 million in winnings on the 2019 World Series with all the wagers made on the Astros but he didn’t end up winning, instead losing millions which is probably why his World Series bet on the team this year is so small by comparison but still, a $10K bet is pretty big for such an underdog and for normal sports bettors everywhere to make on one bet.

Mattress Mack Continues His Astros Betting

In 2021, Mack returned to the Astros fanbase of bets, dropping two multi-million-dollar bets on his local MLB team. At +1000, Mack dropped seven figures at FanDuel Sportsbook and bet nearly double that at William Hill as well. With over $3.35 million worth of MLB betting liability, Mack would be able to profit roughly $30 million from the regulated online sportsbooks. Despite being local to Texas, it was actually in Indiana where the bets were placed, as the action locked in on the 2021 MLB season.

Mattress Mack Pays For Nuns To Attend ALCS

Mattress Mack may have felt that his Astros bets could use a little extra help, as he paid for a group of nuns to attend Game 1 of the 2021 ALCS against the Boston Red Sox. The Astros won that game off of clutch home run hitting from Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, and it seems like Mack’s hope for divine intervention was granted. However, the nuns did not attend Game 2, and the Astros summarily lost. There is no word on Mattress Mack’s future plans to solicit divine intervention.
