Few California Tribes are set on 2024 for sports betting

As of now, there are two sports betting bills that have received enough signatures to be on the 2022 November Ballot in California.
The sports betting bill, backed by commercial sportsbooks, would give 85% of taxes towards mental health & homelessness programs.

HIGHLAND, CA- The people of California have been fighting for legal sports betting since early 2020 and every attempt has been shut down in the past.

However, there is a very good chance that a bill could be passed during the November ballot that would legalize sports betting for the public, but would not exactly make everyone involved happy.

California Tribes Drop 2022 Mobile Betting Proposal

There was a sports betting bill run by San Manuel and three tribes that have stated that they no longer are going to pursue their mobile sports betting bill during the November 2022 Ballot and would rather wait until 2024.

They are focusing on preventing the California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Act from being passed, which is being backed by seven commercial sportsbooks. This leaves two sports betting bills still on the table.

There are 80 tribal casinos spread throughout California and they bring in around $8 billion each year in revenue. If sports betting is regulated in California, there are plenty of casinos for commercial sportsbooks to partner with, without San Manuel’s backing.

The Two Current Propositions

There are currently two sports betting bills that have been officially approved to join the November 2022 ballot.

The Tribal initiative for in-person sports betting is being backed by 23 tribes in California and the California Secretary of State and is pushing for sports betting to only occur and be allowed on tribal grounds.

These Tribes would prefer to keep the exclusivity of California Sports Betting in tribal hands.

Received the required 997,139 signatures.
15% of revenue would be redirected towards problem gambling.
It would also allow raps and roulette in tribal casinos.

The other sports betting bill is being backed by commercial sportsbook operators and is running through The California Solutions to Homelessness and Mental Health Act. If passed in November, this bill would require each online sportsbook to partner with a tribal casino.

Even though the initiative by San Manuel and the three tribes made it very clear they are against any bill but their own, there are still many tribal casinos that have expressed interest in partnering with these commercial sportsbooks for legal sports betting opportunities.

Received 1.6 million signatures (997,139 needed to pass).
Even if they do not participate in this sports betting bill, 15% of the revenue from mobile betting will be directed to tribal casinos.
Homeless and mental health programs will receive 85% of the tax generated from sports betting.
