Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders

  • Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has announced the immediate suspension of his presidential campaign, leaving former Vice President Joe Biden as the presumptive Democratic nominee.
  • Biden (+125) is a slight underdog against incumbent President Donald Trump (-110) for the general election in November.
  • The sociopolitical situation is volatile because of COVID-19, and candidates like Andrew Cuomo, Mike Pence, and Nikki Haley still have an outside chance.

BURLINGTON, Vt.Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, one of two remaining candidates in the Democratic primary election, announced on Wednesday that his campaign would be immediately suspended.

Sanders’s decision to suspend his campaign came on the heels of Wisconsin’s decision not to delay its primary elections or extend the deadline for absentee ballots, which could prove fatal for many of the state’s voters.

Sanders trailed former Vice President Joe Biden by a sizable margin in the Democratic primary election prior to his announcement, and with no remaining candidates, Biden should have a straight shot to the nomination.

The updated 2020 presidential election odds are:

BetOnline:

  • Donald Trump -110
  • Joe Biden +125
  • Andrew Cuomo +2500
  • Mike Pence +3300
  • Hillary Clinton +5000

5Dimes:

  • Donald Trump -120
  • Joe Biden +100

Despite Sanders ending his campaign, election odds have shifted little, as Biden was already a heavy favorite to secure the nomination.

Who Else Could Win This Election?

A Trump-Biden showdown in November now looks inevitable, but with so much uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an outside possibility that a future development or emergency could force Biden or Trump to step down.

Several major media outlets have raised concerns about the potential cognitive decline in both candidates  and COVID-19 disproportionately harms older people. Either of those health issues could force one or both candidates to step down, although that is unlikely.

If Biden drops out, the favorite to replace him as the Democratic nominee is New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.

New York has become ground zero in the fight against COVID-19, and Cuomo has become one of the most visible politicians in the U.S. Cuomo has drawn praise from Democrats for his candidness during COVID-19 briefings and for his efforts to work with the federal government to fight the virus.

BetOnline is even offering a prop bet one whether Biden will become the nominee or if it will be someone else:

Democratic Nominee For The Presidential Election:

  • Joe Biden -1000
  • Not Joe Biden +500

On the other side of the aisle, if President Trump were to step down for any reason, his successor would likely be Vice President Mike Pence. Another dark horse option is former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who has been talked about as a potential new running mate for Trump in 2020.

While it is possible that one of these alternative candidates could take the reins, it is exceedingly unlikely. The smart money is still on either Trump or Biden no matter the legal sports betting site.
