Legal North Dakota Sports Betting
Many residents of the Peace Garden state wonder if legal North Dakota sports betting options exist. Currently, ND has no state-sponsored forms of sports betting but state officials in 2021 have been teasing at the possibility of a new bill that will allow ND residents to vote on sports betting as early as November of 2021. Still, there is no denying that there are thousands of sports fans that bet on the North Dakota State Bison and their other favorite teams. They are able to legally do this by using licensed online sportsbooks rather than attempting to bet with illicit bookmakers that may be operating within state lines.

North Dakota Sports Betting And Gambling Laws
Learning North Dakota sports betting and gambling laws is easy because there are not many in existence. The state used to go off of a federal law known as PASPA that made sports betting in the US illegal; however, the law has since been overturned and allows for each state to make their own choices. In North Dakota’s case, state laws state that sports betting is permitted should the wager not exceed $25. There are no state-run sportsbooks though so finding an opportunity to enter into a wager is difficult as working with an unlicensed operator is a serious offense.
NDCC § 53-06.2 authorizes the pari-mutuel wagering system on horse races within the state. Furthermore, North Dakota has legalized simulcasting at licensed racetracks and off-track betting facilities. To bet on the track, a patron must only be 18 years of age, while betting on horses at an OTB location requires an age of 21.

2021 North Dakota Sports Betting Legislation
North Dakota has a resolution on the table in 2021 that would allow residents in the state to vote on legalizing a sports betting market through their ballots in November 2022. House Concurrent Resolution 3032 passed in the House Judiciary Committee on February 17. The resolution would give constituents the ability to legalize sports betting but has stipulated that collegiate wagers be prohibited should a market be legalized in North Dakota. The North Dakota Legislative Assembly adjourns on April 28 and both chambers of the House will need to approve of the resolution before it can be sent to Governor Doug Burgum’s desk where he has already said he would sign off on the proposal. No date has been scheduled for the next hearing of HCR 3032 within the House.
Where To Bet On Sports In North Dakota
Unfortunately, North Dakota has not yet legalized either online or retail sports betting. It is still possible to legally bet on sports, but players must do so through internationally licensed websites rather than with an in-state providers. These international gambling platforms offer a great variety of options and features to create a smooth gaming experience for all, but it is still disappointing that North Dakota hasn’t legalized sports betting. If you want to bet at a brick-and-mortar sportsbook, you will need to leave the state. A few nearby sports betting states include:
Where’s The Closest Place To Me To Bet?
- Fort Totten
- Fort Yates
- Four Bears Village
- Grand Forks
If you felt the desire to visit a sportsbook, you may have to hop on a plane as no neighboring states offer legal sports betting. South Dakota may legalize sports betting at Deadwood, S.D. in November 2020 but it will depend on how voters decide on their ballots. Online sports betting is always an option for those not looking to make the journey as its convenience provides everything a land-based casino would (if not more) in terms of wagering options. To its appeal, ND is positioned well away from other states so traveling is far but some of the nearest cities with legal sportsbooks include:
- Council Bluffs, IA
- Des Moines, IA
- Indianapolis, IN
- Las Vegas, NV
- Hot Springs, AR
- Albuquerque, NM
- Philadelphia, PA
- Biloxi, MS

Future Of Legal And Regulated Sports Betting In North Dakota
The future of legal and regulated sports betting in North Dakota is starting to become clearer as there have been talks of bringing legal sports betting to the state. The 2019 legislative session began with legislators entering a bill that would consider sports betting a game of chance and allow for it with limited restrictions. Introduced by both the Senate and the House, House Bill 1295 would have allowed for wagering on professional sports or athletic events only and looked to grant licenses within the state. While the bill ultimately didn’t pass, a discussion alone is a major step forward for sports betting in North Dakota as many other states begin to legalize across the country.
